You are invited. New Clerk Support Assembly meets tonight.

Dear valued Clerk,

Michigan election law is undergoing its greatest changes in 50 years, and municipal and township clerks are under more pressure than ever. In response, Michigan Fair Elections formed the Clerk Assembly with the exclusive purpose of serving the needs of clerks and their deputies. This is your support group. The Clerk Assembly was created by clerks to preserve and protect clerks.

The MFE Clerk Assembly meets weekly via Zoom to discuss key issues and formulate solutions. We are meeting today at 6 PM (Thursday, July 6), and we hope you will join us. Please register here.

The agenda below was created from a letter from a concerned clerk. Michigan Fair Elections has no quick answers to these valid and urgent concerns. However, if we gather to exchange ideas and then speak with a united voice, we believe we can offer glimmers of hope.

Apologies in advance for the short notice. If you cannot attend tonight’s meeting, we hope you will register for notifications of future meetings. Link and agenda below.

I look forward to meeting you.

Respectfully,

Patrice Johnson, chair

Agenda

MFE Clerk Support Assembly (CSA)

Thursday, July 6, 2023

6 p.m. to 7 p.m. via Zoom

Old business:

New business: A. In consideration of the comment below from a clerk, what can CSA do to help clerks and their associations have greater voice in legislation and actions affecting their jobs?

As a clerk, I was incredulous that the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks, the Michigan Municipal League, legislators, etc. never came out against Proposal 2 prior to the election.

B. Consider this issue: Townships, villages, and small cities have neither the staff (most are part-time) nor facilities to hold the early voting days. As a result, to quote a clerk,

We will be forced to combine with other small municipalities for the 9 days, have ALL the various ballots on hand, and find a location to accommodate everything. My voters will have to go to one location for the early voting, drop off a ballot at another location, and vote on Election Day at another.

C. How to clean the voter rolls, when,

Until now, sending applications was a way to know we had an incorrect address. Now, we will be sending ballots to a last known address. The amount of returned mail is astonishing already.

D. Meeting time discussion: Thursday evenings are busy meeting times. Would it be all right with the group if we change the Clerk Support Group meeting to Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30, Tuesdays 6:30 to 7:30, or Monday's 4:30 to 5:30?
