The following is an excerpt from a Detroit News editorial, published January 17, 2024.
City and township clerks throughout Michigan say they can't pull off the requirements for Michigan's presidential primary election without the support Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson promised with the passage of new voting laws last summer.
We had concerns about codifying voting laws in the state constitution when Proposal 2 was on the ballot. Those concerns were amplified as subsequent legislation implementing the ballot measure was passed last year.
Now, 40 days before the state's presidential primary election — which Democrats pushed up for partisan purposes — Michigan clerks are scrambling to prepare for the balloting under the new regulations and requirements.
"We need you to be aware … of the anguish and astronomical expense this legislation has caused for clerks as we try to find ways to comply," says a letter dated Jan. 11 from 74 Michigan city and township clerks to Benson and Bureau of Elections Director Jonathan Brater.
That's despite $46 million lawmakers allocated this year for implementation of Proposal 2.
Clerks are "losing sleep," the letter says, over a provision that requires them to contact every voter registered for a permanent absentee if they fail to return the form designating whether they want a Republican or Democratic ballot 40 days before the election.
